Thinking Biblically About Faith

……………the just shall live by faith.  Galatians 3:11

• What is faith? Is it a leap in the dark?

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Faith is both substance and evidence.

According to W.E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, faith is a firm persuasion or conviction based upon hearing.

• Faith should not be placed randomly. Faith has a clear objective.

The Apostle Paul defined the gospel in I Corinthians 15:1-4. It is clear and simple.

Moreover brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I have preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I have preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also have received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

• Faith is the gangplank used to board the ship of grace (we are saved by grace through faith).  Misplaced faith can be used to board the wrong ship.

Warning against false teachers Jesus said: Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.  Matthew 7:21-23

• Saving faith is based upon the finished work and merit of Jesus Christ alone.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  Acts 4:12

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8&9

• Is faith important?

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.  Hebrews 11:6

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  Ephesians 6:16

• How do we get faith?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly!
