And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed* unto the day of redemption.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. <\/strong><\/em>Ephesians 4:30-32<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Holy Spirit is a person.\u00a0 He is not a power or influence.\u00a0 The reference above from Ephesians indicates that we can grieve Him.\u00a0 A power or influence cannot be grieved.\u00a0 Only a person can be grieved.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Triune God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Listed below are a few verses among many that point out attributes, actions and personal pronouns used to describe the Holy Spirit’s actions and identity which indicate His personhood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0that beareth witness,<\/span> because\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0is truth.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> I John 5:6<\/strong><\/p>\n

But God hath revealed them unto us by his\u00a0Spirit:<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 for\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0searcheth all thin<\/span>gs<\/span>, yea,\u00a0the\u00a0deep things of God.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>I Corinthians 2:10<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0said unto Philip<\/span>, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Acts 8:29<\/strong><\/p>\n

But they rebelled, and vexed his\u00a0holy\u00a0Spirit:<\/span> therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. <\/strong><\/em>Isaiah 63:10<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which in other ages was not made known unto\u00a0the\u00a0sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his\u00a0holy\u00a0apostles and prophets by\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit.\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Ephesians 3:5<\/strong><\/p>\n

For it is not ye that speak, but\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0of your Father which speaketh in you.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Matthew 10:20<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Spirit\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0LORD spake by me<\/span>, and his<\/span> word was in my tongue.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>II Samuel 23:2<\/strong><\/p>\n

He that hath an ear, let him hear what\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0saith<\/span> unto\u00a0the\u00a0churches.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Revelation 2:29, 3:6, 13, & 22<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0of truth; whom\u00a0the\u00a0world cannot receive, because it seeth him<\/span> not, neither knoweth him<\/span>: but ye know him<\/span>; for he dwelleth<\/span> with you, and shall be in you.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>John 14:17<\/strong><\/p>\n

While Peter thought on\u00a0the\u00a0vision,\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0said<\/span> unto him,<\/span> Behold, three men seek thee.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Acts 10:19<\/strong><\/p>\n

And\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0bade me go<\/span> with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into\u00a0the\u00a0man’s house:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Acts 11:12<\/strong><\/p>\n

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit\u00a0of his Son<\/span> into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father<\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> Galatians 4:6<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from\u00a0the\u00a0beginning; from\u00a0the\u00a0time that it was, there am I: and now\u00a0the\u00a0Lord GOD, and his\u00a0Spirit, hath sent me<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Isaiah 48:16<\/strong><\/p>\n

And he that searcheth\u00a0the\u00a0hearts knoweth what is\u00a0the\u00a0mind of\u00a0the\u00a0Spirit,<\/span> because he maketh intercession<\/span> for\u00a0the\u00a0saints according to\u00a0the\u00a0will of God.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>Romans 8:27<\/strong><\/p>\n

These verses clearly show us that the Holy Spirit is a person.\u00a0 God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are the three persons of the Godhead.\u00a0 Their personages emphasize the fact that knowing God or being\u00a0 a Christian is a relationship.\u00a0 This relationship is made possible with God the Father through God the Son and by God the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Christian is indwelt by the person of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 To resist His working in our life to transform us into the image of Christ is to grieve Him or to make Him sorrowful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>We are to put away the things that grieve the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 These things are listed in the opening verses above as: <\/strong>bitterness (bitter hatred), and wrath (an outburst of hot anger, passion), and anger (smoldering anger with the idea of revenge), and clamour (the tumult of controversy), and evil speaking (railing, reviling, blasphemy),…with all malice (badness in quality, opposite of excellence, vicious character). **<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In contrast to the things that we are to put away, believers are to be kind, tenderhearted and forgiving one to another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

……let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.<\/em>…..<\/strong><\/p>\n
