{"id":2202,"date":"2018-12-11T03:43:55","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T03:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leadinghorsestowater.net\/?p=2202"},"modified":"2019-01-20T21:54:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-20T21:54:29","slug":"speaking-in-tongues-part-iv-when-do-tongues-cease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadinghorsestowater.net\/?p=2202","title":{"rendered":"Speaking in Tongues &#8211; Part IV &#8211; When Do Tongues Cease?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Charity never faileth: but whether\u00a0there be\u00a0prophecies, they shall fail; whether\u00a0there be\u00a0tongues, they shall cease; whether\u00a0there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>I Corinthians 13:8-12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Charity never faileth:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Charity<\/em> or biblical love, the fruit of the Spirit, is everlasting.\u00a0 It will never be abolished.\u00a0 Biblical love will never be rendered inactive.\u00a0 The fruit of the Spirit will last throughout eternity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Propheteia<\/em> is <em>the speaking forth of the mind and counsel of God&#8230;.prophecy is not necessarily, nor even primarily, fore-telling.\u00a0 It is the declaration of that which cannot be known by natural means&#8230;.it is the forth telling of the will of God.\u00a0\u00a0In contrast to love lasting forever, Paul states that prophecies shall fail (be rendered inactive).*\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>whether there be tongues, they shall cease;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Glossolalia or tongues is <em>the supernatural gift of speaking in another language without its having been learned. Acts 2:4-13\u00a0 Pauo <\/em>or cease<em> means to stop, to make an end and is used chiefly in the middle voice in the NT, signifying to come to an end,&#8230;&#8230;.a willing cessation (in contrast to the passive voice which denotes a forced cessation).*<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Ginosko\u00a0(knowledge) signifies to be taking in knowledge, to come to know, recognize, understand*&#8230;.<\/em>&#8230;&#8230;this is the process of learning.\u00a0 <em>Vanish from katargeo<\/em> means <em>to abolish, to be done away.*<\/em>\u00a0 It is the same word<em>\u00a0for fail<\/em> in reference to prophecy which means\u00a0<em>to be rendered inactive.*<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect (complete\/entire) is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Prophecies and knowledge we have <em>in part<\/em>.\u00a0 That which is <em>in part<\/em> shall be rendered inactive.\u00a0 This will happen when <em>that which is perfect is come<\/em>.\u00a0 <i>W<\/i>hat is &#8220;<em>that which is perfect&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>referring to?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Some say it is Christ, but the word\u00a0<em>perfect (teleiov)<\/em> is neuter, so it can&#8217;t be Him.\u00a0 Some say it refers to the completion of the canon of Scripture, but we still prophesy (forth telling the will of God) and knowledge (learning) is still necessary for the believer&#8217;s spiritual growth.\u00a0 <em>That which is perfect <\/em>or complete, therefore, must be referring to eternity with Christ.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The forth telling of the will of God will no longer be necessary in eternity because all those in God&#8217;s presence will be redeemed and in His will.\u00a0 Learning will no longer be necessary, because we will know even as we are known,\u00a0 \u00a0The last two verses in this passage lend themselves to this;\u00a0\u00a0<em>When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I put away childish things<\/span>.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>For <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">now<\/span> we see through a glass, darkly; but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">then<\/span> face to face: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">now<\/span> I know <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in part<\/span>; but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">then<\/span> shall I know even as also I am known.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>But what about tongues?\u00a0 Paul says tongues shall cease in and of themselves.\u00a0 When will this happen?\u00a0 It will happen when the sign gifts are no longer necessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Remember that tongues were for a sign.\u00a0 The sign gifts were the gifts of healing, miracles and tongues.\u00a0 Whenever these gifts were exercised, unbelieving Jews were present.\u00a0 The sign gifts were to confirm to the Jew that what he was seeing and hearing was of God.\u00a0 The sign gift of speaking in tongues warned of coming judgment for the rejection of God&#8217;s rule per Paul&#8217;s instruction in\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I Corinthians 14:21&amp;22 which quotes Isaiah 28:11&amp;12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Jewish religious leaders completed their rejection of the Messiah and His kingdom by turning Christ over to the Roman authorities for the death penalty.\u00a0 The sign gifts would continue to warn of God&#8217;s judgment until judgment fell.\u00a0 When Titus destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD\u00a0there was no longer a need for the sign gifts to Israel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">God&#8217;s revelation of Himself to mankind through a nation of peculiar people (Israel) has been suspended throughout the period of the church age.\u00a0 When the believing church (which includes both regenerate Jews and Gentiles) is complete, the last soul is saved, and the church is raptured (caught up) out of this world, God will once again deal with Israel as a nation.\u00a0 He will deliver Israel from their enemies and restore to the nation His kingdom as they call on Messiah Jesus for deliverance in the last days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pray for the peace of Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Note:\u00a0 This is the fourth section in a series of studies on <em>Speaking in Tongues<\/em> in this blog.\u00a0 I would invite you to review the previous three studies, if you haven&#8217;t already, because they build upon each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>For a more complete study of this topic please read <em>The Corinthian Catastrophe<\/em> by George E.
