But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Just before the apostle Paul made the statement above he gave his pedigree as follows:\u00a0Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:\u00a0<\/em>Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel,\u00a0of\u00a0the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;\u00a0<\/em>Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.\u00a0<\/em> Philippians 3:4-6<\/p>\n

When Paul submitted himself to the righteousness of Christ, those former things\u00a0making up his pedigree, became loss to him.\u00a0 MacArthur’s notes in his NKJV study Bible indicate that the terms Paul used in Philippians 3, loss<\/em> and gain<\/em>, were accounting terms.* Those things that were gain became\u00a0loss<\/em>\u00a0and were now liabilities.\u00a0 Those things that were loss became\u00a0gain and were now<\/em>\u00a0assets.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The apostle Paul’s statement makes us ask ourselves: What things are gain to me?\u00a0\u00a0What are those things that cause me to trust in the flesh?\u00a0 What are those things that draw me away from trusting Christ?<\/p>\n

What things cause us to trust in the flesh?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Personal glory<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reputation\/<\/strong>Respect<\/strong><\/p>\n

Making a Name for Myself<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pedigree\/<\/strong>Accolades<\/strong><\/p>\n

Intellectual Prowess<\/strong><\/p>\n

Acceptance\/<\/strong>Recognition\/Admiration<\/strong><\/p>\n

Riches\/<\/strong>Success\/<\/strong>Accomplishments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pleasure\/Leisure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Friends (of stature)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Financial Security<\/strong><\/p>\n

Titles<\/strong><\/p>\n

What did the apostle Paul conclude about the things that were gain to him in the past?<\/p>\n

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:<\/em><\/p>\n

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

If by any means I might attain\u00a0unto (arrive at)\u00a0the resurrection of the dead.\u00a0 Philippians 3:7-11<\/em><\/p>\n

Works establish self-righteousness.\u00a0 Salvation by grace through faith is based only on the merit of Christ and Christ provides believers with the righteousness of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n
